Installations and Sculpture

My work, whether it is in installation or two dimensional forms, explores classic elements of structure, balance and elegance while furthering contemporary applications of both painting and sculpture. With regard to painting, I supplement my traditional choice of acrylic paint with materials less traditional for fine art, including and not limited to tempera paint and fluorescent markers. I use unconventional materials along with chalk, oil paints and marker, to achieve a more animated landscape and produce striking lines. In exploring traditional and previously well examined elements of composition, I investigate the interaction of shape, mass and weight, in images that are generally abstract and sometimes vaguely representational. My use of color is not limited to bright or dull colors, but seeks to include various shades and depths of colors to present an assortment of unique shapes and interfaces. My work succeeds through balance and creating a harmonious landscape by which my viewer may access my diverse material choices and stimulating colors. The same examination of mass and space is also researched in my sculptural and installation pieces. By using objects such as quilts, which have very specific traditional meanings, I ask to viewer to examine preconceived notions of certain materials. My sculptural work places traditionally feminine pieces next to bone and glass and asked the viewer to consider these materials in relation to one another. In these sculptures the same consideration is given to creating a harmonious landscape and successful interaction of color as in the paintings.
